 Mayagüez Origins

The city of Mayagüez was founded in 1760.  The name Mayagüez means “place of the waters”.  Its founding father was Mr. Faustino Matos.

After the city was founded, its main economic resource was agriculture.  Imports and exports added to the growth of the city.  The first construction project was the Customs building in 1839, and in 1848 the Infantry Quarters were built, where the Federal Post Office is now located.

By 1870 the first transportation and communications infrastructure was developed; the first telegraph from Mayagüez to Puerto Rico’s capital, San Juan, was inaugurated; and in 1872 the first urban railroad system was established. In 1896, the Christopher Columbus Statue was erected in the main square of Mayagüez and by that same time the first electric street lighting system was put into operation.
